Late in the 1971 model year rumors began in Detroit that the Pontiac Firebird and Chevy Camaro were going to disappear from the General Motors lineup. As rumor had it, GM was going to drop both models because sales were down and it was becoming too expensive to build them. Several enthusiasts who worked for the Pontiac division fought hard enough and in the end saved both models and they turned out to be big successes! The '72 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am looked neatly identical to the '71 model - many considering this a good thing. It takes a real expert to tell the two apart. Only the V8 engine was used in the '72 model, the 455 cid HO version along with F60-15 Goodyear Eagle white-letter tires.
