In 1990, BMW launched the M3 (E30) Sport Evolution. It is the lest of its kind for the E30 model body style and probably the most extreme. Production hit the 600 unit mark, surpassing the 500 unit replacement for homologation in Group-A DTM. Besides the regulation for the race car's engine and displacement needing to be the same with the homologated car, the race car is not allowed to have any deviations in the areas of aerodynamics and sheet metal. The Sport Evolution displaces 2467cc, slightly below the 2500cc limit for Group-A. The powerhouse underneath the hood is a 4-cylinder 2.5-litre DTM racing engines that produces 365 bhp at 8,750 rpm and can reach 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds with a top speed approximately 275 km/hr. For added down force at high speed, the Sport Evolution is equipped with an adjustable front splitter and rear lip spoiler. In place of the 3-piece modular wheels, wider fender wells made room for the new larger 18" BBS magnesium monoblock wheels. The curb weight of the car is 920 kils (2,024 lbs) - the minimum homologated weight. Ultimately with changes to race regulations in 1993 and the introduction of the new BMW 3-Series (E36), the M3 Sport Evolution (E30) was retired from European competitions at the end of the 1992 season.
