The hot-performing '66 Chevrolet SS396 was a Chevelle - not a Malibu, and this model stressed "fast" and not "fancy." It was essentially a no-frills muscle car with three different 396 cid engine choices and a reasonable sticker price. Like other Chevelle models, the SS 396 - both coupe and ragtop - featured a new cigar-shaped body with forward-leaning front fenders. The top motor option was the RPO L78 engine, then the RPO L34, and standard was the RPO L35 with 325 hp at 4800 rpm and 410 lbs.-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.
