When the new 4.5 km (2.83 miles) Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit reopened in May 1984 after ungergoing major redevelopment, the inaugural race was a celebrity affair arranged by Daimler-Benz after the launch of the 190E 2.3-16v saloon just months before. Daimler-Benz provided 20 identical near road-spec 190E 2.3-16v cars for the race, with roll cages fitted inside and wider track 7x15 (23mm offset) wheels, and invited a strong field of past, present and future Formula One drivers to provide the thrills.
Several of them - Sir Jack Brabham (1959, 1960 and 1966), Phill Hill (1961), John Surtees (1964), Denny Hulme (1967), Niki Lauda (1975 and 1977), Alan Jones (1980) and Keke Rosberg (1982) - were former world champions, while Stirling Moss could arguably claim to be the greatest of them all. Of the remainder - Carlos Reutemann, John Watson, Klaus Ludwig, Manfred Schuti, Jacques Laffite, Udo Schutz, Hans Herrmann, De Angelis, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna - all had exemplary records in international racing.
Ayrton Senna, a virtual unknown who had made this F1 debut just two months before, won the race driving car no. 11 and Niki Lauda came second in car no. 18. That year pressure on Mercedes-Benz to help privateers develop the 190E to meet Group-A regulations began to grow.
