In 1969, Mercury sunk its claws into the pony-car market literally and figuratively by introducing the sleek Cougar Eliminator. The horizontally ribbed grille included hidden headlamps, but lest you thought the car was sleeping, the growling from beneath the hood proved otherwise. A number of high-powered engine options were available, and the cat's "pelt" was available in four different factory colors. This "road animal" got its claws into many muscle car enthusiasts.
