The '70 Mustang Mach 1 351 Sidewinder Special is one of the remaining mysteries of the Ford Mustang history. The Sidewinders were all Dearborn built in the 152,000 to 156,000 serial number range and were sent to the Omaha, Nebraska district sales office. The cars seem to have been sold at Ford dealers in Iowa and Nebraska.
Research from the Ford Motor Company files identify a real Sidewinder as all having the 351/4V engine, all are Sportsroofs and built in Dearborn, Michigan. From original pictures and Ford people interviewed, it is likely that the Sidewinder Special was a Ford sales promotion, not a dealer-only offering. Original owners speak of the stripe kit box (with a Ford part number) shipped with their car and packed in the trunk. Dealer body men also confirm mounting Sidewinder stripe kits on final delivery to customers. Around 40 Sidewinder Specials are known to have exisited, with possibly more made but fully undocumented yet.
