The BOSS 302 was essentially a package option for 1969 and 1970 Mustangs. But this package was not limited to flashy stripes and a set of shiny wheels. Based on the success of Fords factory-backed SCCA/Trans- Am Mustang race teams, the BOSS 302 combined high-revving engine performance with a competition-type suspension, resulting in one of the hottest production cars of all time. The 1970 BOSS 302 was the culmination of this Ford concept.
The 1970 BOSS 302 package started with a cant-valved, four-bolt main block 302 cubic inch V-8 engine with solid-lifter cam and forged steel crank. A huge manual choke 780cfm Holley carburetor fed a dual plane 4V intake with optional Ram Air induction system complete with Shaker style hood scoop (not available in 1969). Free-flowing cast iron exhausts dumped into a true dual exhaust system. Mated to a Top Loader four- speed transmission (available in wide-ratio and close ratio versions), was a new Hurst H pattern shifter. Stiff coil springs, 15/16 inch sway bars, Gabriel shock absorbers and single piston, floating caliper, 11.3 inch diameter disc brakes kept the high-powered Mustang on the road. New reflective black striping design and 13 different eye-grabbing color combinations made the BOSS 302 look as good as it could go.
