The '65 Chevrolet Malibu convertible, especially the extra clean lines of the SS model, were a common home for the 327 engine. The Super Sport package with standard bucket seats, a center console (for 4-speed and Powerglide transmission equipped cars), a full gauge package and unique trim, transformed the Chevelle into anything from a luxury cruising machine to a serious street contender depending on how the option list was manipulated. With Super Sport-only colors such as Evening Orchid, Glacier Gray and Crocus Yellow, a Super Sport could be made special indeed. Uniqueness aside, almost everyone of the era remembers owning or at least riding in one of these early Chevelle models. One of the most popular cars of their day, the early Chevelle has maintained its popularity which continues strong to this day among muscle car enthusiasts.

The Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 of 1970 produced 450 horsepower in LS6 form — making it one of the most powerful production cars of the muscle car era. The Chevelle nameplate ran from 1964 to 1977, with the 1969–1972 period considered the performance peak.
