The Thunderbolt evolved by combining the lightweight Fairlane 500 with a little "shoehorn engineering" - that is, they coaxed the big Galaxie model's high-rise 427 CID V8 into the Fairlane body. The result was the Fairlane Thunderbolt; a 425 horsepower, single-purpose drag racing legend. In the end, Ford's efforts and expenditures paid off. The '64 season saw the Thunderbolt take home the World Championship for Top Stock Eliminator!
