Just 9,670 of the Corvette roadster were produced in 1959 and sold at the base price of $3,875. This was the last year that annual sales of the Corvette were below 10,000 units. The external changes to the car were the removal of the louvered hood and the chrome trim on the trunk lid. Among the standard features were a tachometer, an outside rearview mirror, an electric clock and twin exhausts. The gauge lenses were now concave to eliminate glare and improve readability. During the first year of production the options available included a 4-speed manual transmission with reverse lockout "T" shift handle and a black interior. New performance options included nylon black wall tires. The body frame was an X-braced welded steel box section and the base engine was 283 cubic inches producing 230 HP.
